The Honours examination comprises four modules of three hours each and one research essay. The four modules represent 20 credits each and the research essay represents 40 credits. The course provides two options, namely focus on German literature with one component German language study, or German language and linguistics with one literature component. Three modules are compulsory:

Compulsory modules:

Year modules
Module 1: Research essay on a particular genre or on a linguistic topic
Module 2: German literature from the second half of the 20th century and contemporary German literature
Module 3: German syntax and morphology

Elective modules:

Students may choose two modules from the following list:

Year modules
Module 4: German literature from the 17th and 18th century
Module 5: German literature from the 19th century
Module 6: German literature from the first half of the 20th century
Module 7: Practical translation
Module 8: Translation theory

Admission requirements

Prerequisite: BA with German as a major, minimum 65%.

Registration and Start Dates

Registration starts in January and lectures in February for both Undergraduate and Postgraduate course work programmes.

All research programmes for Masters and PhD can register throughout the year.

End Date: Academic starts in January and ends in December. Programme deadline is determined by the duration of the programme.
