Program Description

Bachelor in Pattern Design

VIA University College

Bachelor in Pattern Design

The bachelor programme in Pattern Design is a 3½-year full-time programme taught in English structured as an AP degree and a BA top-up.

The Pattern Design programme will qualify you to work speci¬fically with the design of garments – turning ideas into something that can be realized in practice. You will be able to take responsibility for complex pattern design and grading solutions using the newest CAD technology.

You will be trained to apply, compare and combine pattern construction methods and to analyze and assess the impact of grading methods on the fit and silhouette of a garment. Based on your knowledge of tech¬nical production methods, you will be able to transform the designer’s vision into a perfectly fitted garment.

The programme takes place at Campus Herning.

Content and Structure

The Bachelor (BA) top-up takes three semesters. Whereas the AP degree programme provides you with basic insight and tools to navigate in the fashion industry, the BA top-up gives you the chance to become deeply absorbed in pattern design. At this stage of your education, we expect you to be able to work in a more independent manner.

The programme is organized with joint projects for all BA students during the first semester. Afterwards, we focus on your chosen specialty.

Elective course subjects and a placement period on the 3rd and 6th semester in the fashion industry are compulsory parts of the programme as well, and you conclude your studies with a bachelor assignment.

At the end of your BA degree, you will be qualified to participate in a higher education programme or find a job in the fashion and lifestyle sector.

Career Opportunities

With a BA degree in Pattern Design, you have the chance to work as a pattern designer in the fashion industry. You will often have the responsibility for the fitting of the product and for the communication of this to Danish as well as international business partners.

The pattern designer evaluates the sketches of the fashion designer in order to determine the advisable methods of manufacturing. Besides, the pattern designer makes sure the fitting lives up to the expectations of the target group as well as matching the identity and price level of the brand.

The theoretical knowledge which you acquire during your studies will be an advantage when it comes to managing projects in a design department.
