Introduction
The role of accountants in business continues to evolve with the accelerating demands of a global economy. While traditional skills will always be in demand, accountants are now required to supplement their financial expertise with technical and communication skills. The next generation of accountants will need the knowledge and ability to analyze financial information and convert those results into predictive tools. Ultimately, successful businesses are managed by financial information. No one is better prepared or qualified to produce, analyze, and interpret that information than an accountant.
In order to sit for the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination, students are required to have 36 hours of accounting, all of which are available in the HSU curriculum. Students must also have 150 total hours of academic credit from an accredited institution; that is, 26 hours beyond the 124 hours required for the B.B.A. degree.
The CPA examination and its prerequisites are only required of those students going into public accounting. For those going into private industry or the nonprofit sector, the traditional B.B.A. with a major in accounting will be adequate preparation. The Kelley College of Business does offer the joint B.B.A.-M.B.A. program so that students working toward the 150-hour requirement can obtain a master's degree with little additional coursework.

Career Opportunities
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), accounting jobs are expected to grow by 10 percent annually through 2026, faster than the average for all occupations. This is good news as accounting majors will be in demand for the foreseeable future and can expect a long career in their chosen field. The employment rate for accountants tends to move with the business cycle, which means that as the economy grows, accounting jobs will grow proportionately.
Salary Expectations for Accountants
In May 2017, the annual salary for accountants averaged $69,350. The lowest 10 percent earned $43,020 while the highest 10 percent earned $122,220. The industry an accountant works in does not seem to be a determinant of salary. The highest median salary of $74,140 is found in finance and insurance. The lowest median salary is found in government accounting jobs, totaling $67,100.
