Introduction
This BEng programme equips you with the underlying knowledge and skills you need to become a creative Civil and Structural Engineer, capable of planning, designing and overseeing the construction of sustainable structures and transport infrastructure systems.
Professional accreditation
This course is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators which includes the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation, the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institute of Highway Engineers and the Institution of Highways and Transportation, and satisfies the educational base to becoming an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and partially meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng). This course is also recognised by ENAEE (European Network for Accreditation of Engineering Education).
Admissions
Curriculum
Civil and Structural Engineering involves the design, construction and maintenance and repair infrastructures such as roads and bridges, buildings, and underground transport systems.
You’ll develop a broad knowledge of geotechnical, structural, environmental and management aspects of civil engineering, and gain the computing, mathematical, drawing and communication skills you need as an engineer.
A placement year in industry, taken in year three of the programme, enables you to build contacts whilst developing your skills and professional confidence.
On completion of the programme, you’ll be able to enter a range of graduate civil engineering roles. Our employability rate is 97% - one of the highest in the UK.
You’ll be joining a dynamic profession with a high demand for skilled graduates, and contribute to the prosperity of our society.
We also offer a 5-year MEng version of the programme. The additional academic year enables further study of the technical and managerial aspects of civil and structural engineering and provides the fastest route to Chartered Engineer status.
The programme is intended to enable graduates to develop the engineering, design, management and personal skills required to become professional Civil and/or Structural Engineers and in doing so, also equip them for careers in other professions.
Please note that for the 2020 entry, the module information is subject to change.

Sandwich year
This programme offers you the opportunity to take up a placement year working in the industry in your third year.
The placement year is an excellent way to develop your professional experience, build industry contacts, and gain insight into the day-to-day work of a professional engineer.
During the second year, we’ll offer you all the support you need to find a placement that is aligned with your career aspirations and personal interests.
These include sessions on CVs, interviews etc. from the Careers Service at the University and presentations by both employers and previous year's students on their placements.
Once on placement, you’ll have support and guidance from a placements tutor, who will monitor your progress.
After completing your placement you’ll return to complete the final year of the programme, and apply all you’ve learnt to your studies. Many students continue their relationship with their placement employers - working for them part-time, developing final year projects with them or going back to them into graduate positions.
Learning and assessment
We deliver our modules using innovative teaching methods that combine theory with practice.
You’ll undertake a range of design exercises where you’ll address real industry problems/scenarios.
These projects enable you to apply your theoretical knowledge while improving your communication skills.
Teaching methods include formal lectures, case studies, tutorial exercises, practical demonstrations, site visits, directed learning, and group and individual work. Modules are assessed through formal written examinations, class tests, analytical and experimental coursework, and presentations.
